ART TPS II 2-Channel Variable Impedance Tube Preamp Review

ART TPS II 2-Channel Variable Impedance Tube Preamp

I originally bought this for a friend that was trying to setup a small home studio. It was easily the biggest audio-purchasing mistake I have ever made. We plugged the ART TPS up and it sounded horrible so, I said "screw it I will switch out the tube with a mesa-boogie". Well I opened up the ART TPS switched out the tube and it made absolutely no difference! I thought I may have done something wrong took a closer look and was surprised by what I found. The ART TPS is simply a solid state preamp (a poor one at that) which runs the signal through the tube in an attempt to add some warmth. This is just an absolute waste of money.
Alternatives:
I am not a fan of bringing up a problem then not providing an alternative so here are a few good choices for preamps.
1. The Mackie Blackjack. It uses the same excellent onyx preamps you will find in their higher end models. They have an amazing amount of gain (enough to drive a dynamic mic without noise) and a hint of warmth. Also you get a very good computer interface. Best part is that it is the same price as the TPS 2.
2. The ART MPA. I know it seems odd that I slam one ART product only to recommend another but, the MPA unlike the TPS 2 is a true tube preamp. Stock it sounds pretty good but if you switch out the tubes it can sound great. Although it is about twice the price as the TPS 2.
3. The Presonus Bluetube. I have not personally used this preamp but have some friends that really like it. The Bluetube costs slightly more than the TPS 2.

ART Tube MP Project Series Microphone Preamp Review

This preamp is really a great value. Is it of a professional studio quality? No. But it produces very clean, noise free amplification and a level line out to plug into either a computers soundcard or an audio interface. The tube aspect of the pre is subtle but it's there. There are better solid state pres on the market but I can assure you that this pre is better than your onboard pre on either your interface or mixer. You'll notice an improvement over the warmth and smoothness of the tone you produce. I use this pre for both dynamic mics (SM57) and condensers (Golden Age Project FC1 Mk.ii)

PreSonus Tubepre Single-Channel Vacuum Tube Mic Pre Review

This is a great starter preamp.
When i first started recording i was using an akg perception 200 and tascam 122L. the 122 is a decent interface but is almost too transparent for its own good. All of my vocal recordings sounded lifeless and detached.
I purchased this inexpensive preamp and found that it certainly did add the subtle harmonics needed to liven up the tone.
I read online that many people thought that while this preamp is decent for the price, merely switching out the stock chinese vacuum tube can really enhance its tone. So I went to G***** C***** and purchased a replacement russian made groove tubes preamp tube and WOW, It really did make a huge difference!(the entire tube switching process took me about 4 minutes, i had never done such a thing before but it was very easy)
So while this is a nice little preamp, a simple $20 upgrade took the quality way above and beyond what you get out of the box.
