Microplane 35019 Home Series Black Fine Ribbon Review

This particular grater is good at several things, but it is also in particular the finest zester ever made: hold the fruit in your off-hand and grate away on top of it with your good hand: the zest quickly and conveniently collects on the back of the blade. But even better: you can watch the grated area of the fruit slowly change from skin colour to white, so you know exactly when to stop before you start to get into the bitter pith.
An added bonus with the fine ribbon grater is that you can give it to your five year-old and have him do the job knowing that he cannot possibly injure himself. Oh, it's remotely possible he could hurt himself, sure, but one of the best early lessons I learned about child-rearing is that it's not our job to stop them getting hurt: we just have to stop them getting injured.
It's impossible to give a proper star rating to this particular grater, though, because the entire Microplane Home Series should be avoided like the plague because of the poor-quality, brittle, transparent plastic the frames are made of. The natural way to get the zest off the grater is to bang it on the edge of a bowl; unfortunately that's also the best way to shorten its life and ensure that your guests discover sharp-edged transparent, glass-like shards in their food.
I no longer own any Home Series graters, and Microplane currently doesn't make a fine ribbon in their Professional or Gourmet lines, so this one is unfortunately the only game in town at the moment. I was lucky enough to get an enormous job-lot of seconds and discontinueds directly from the Microplane site, and it happily included a Pro model of this one (with several different, replaceable blades: a brilliant design). Hopefully they'll reintroduce it, but in the meantime just go easy on this one.

Tom Douglas by Pinzon Microplane Gourmet Series Medium Ribbon Grater Review

I've used a Microplane zester and medium grater for several years and find them to be outstanding gadgets. Several friends received these as gifts from me throughout the years. As an Amazon fan, when I learned of Pinzon working with Microplane to create a line of graters, I jumped at the opportunity to try this ribbon grater. Since I knew nothing of Tom Douglas, his endorsement did not affect my decision to get the ribbon grater.
I first must recommend that if you get the grater, also splurge for the slider attachment. Because this particular grater is unlike others in that it has blades which allow for back and forth motion, the slider holds your cheese, chocolate, nuts or other harder food item, so your fingers and knuckles are better protected. The handle is especially comfortable and would be easier to hold for an arthritic hand because of it's larger and firm shape. The plastic shield is important to protect yourself from sharp blades, so be sure to snap it on before sticking this into a drawer. My other Microplane products do not have that protective shield and I have to be very cautious when searching for them. The rubber foot is also an added bonus which is lacking in my other graters, so I was able to comfortably hold the Pinzon Microplane grater over a plate and create fine ribbons of chocolate for a cake topping. It was secure and didn't slide all over the place. Made in the USA and dishwasher safe, I hand wash and air dry mine because I want to examine it and be sure it's perfectly clean and free of debris when I put it away. I'm going to investigate other products in this line.

Due to the shape of its dual edged teeth, the Medium Ribbon Grater grates thin strips in two directions. Microplane graters feature all stainless steel frame and blade construction, non-slip rubber feet, and ergonomic, soft touch handles for a more comfortable, sure grip.

Microplane Gourmet Series Hand Graters Review

Microplane Gourmet Series Hand Graters

(More customer reviews)
I do a lot of cooking and food prep at home. There are a few gadgets that are indispensable and my Microplane grater was one of them. I wore it out after many years.
Other brands just don't work as well or last as long, so I was searching for Microplanes only. I didn't want another plastic frame, as that was what wore out on the old one. Probably didn't like the dishwasher. But on the Microplane web site I found that they make the "Gourmet series" that has a sturdy metal frame. Perfect!
I checked them out in a large kitchen supply store and loved what I saw. There are a few other lines of Microplane graters (Professional, Home, and another with the Lexan plastic frame) that are pretty good but not as good. Not shaped quite as well, not as easy to handle.
But one real advantage of the Gourmet Series is the "slider attachment" accessory. Only costs a few bucks but it makes it safer to grate food and it fits the Gourmet Series graters perfectly. Only costs a few bucks, too.
And the prices of the Gourmet Series are actually better than the other lines.
So I purchased the fine and medium graters with the slider accessory. I am really, really pleased with them. Great food handling, handles (cushioned just right) make it easy to grip and manage the graters, and the slider helps with the grating and protects my fingers.
I've tried them on a very wide range of materials. Grates nutmeg well (especially with the slider), although I prefer my nutmeg grater for that (kind of shaped like a pepper mill), and handles parmesan cheese like magic. Grate for shaving nuts into a dish, carrots, etc. Haven't run into a problem yet.
And they are built very solid. Frame is solid steel, but not overly heavy in weight. Some brands are pretty flimsy and bend after a bit of use. Not these ones. I liked my previous one with the thick plastic frame for that reason, but it cracked with time. Won't happen with the steel ones!

I like it when a tool performs as expected. This grater does just that. Tired of fighting with the graders in my kitchen, I decided to give this one a try. It works so well I picked up the other models as well. Easy to use, easy to clean, easy to store and it even comes with a cover to protect it during storage.
It works as advertised, I'll be picking up the others in the series.

These Microplane graters are wonderful, but I recommend the Professional versions instead. If you use your graters a lot, the plastic edges will eventually break, so spend the extra few dollars and get the steel edged Professional versions to start with. I just replaced two graters myself because they broke.

Microplane Professional Medium-Ribbon Two-Way Grater Review

Microplane Professional Medium-Ribbon Two-Way Grater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Microplane line of kitchen products has evolved over the past couple of years. This two way grater has:
* AN ALL-METAL FRAME--makes it awesomely durable for heavy duty use. For grating lots of carrots as additions to ground meat or to soups, this grater is tops.
* A RUBBER REST OPPOSITE THE HANDLE--makes it ergonomically more efficient, since you can rest the end on a cutting board or in a bowl, allowing you to use more pressure.
* A PROTECTIVE SHIELD FOR THE GRATING SURFACE--makes it easier to store safely.
* TWO-WAY GRATING--makes it faster, since cutting edges face both ways.
DOWNSIDE: Two way grating means that this grater is inherently less safe. Now you can cut yourself both ways! Also, unless you're "grating" something that melts under hot water, such as butter or chocolate, this two way cutting feature makes this model harder to clean: Bits of carrot or apple stuck between the "blades" cannot be removed by running your fingers the opposite direction from the cutting edge. A wooden toothpick or an old toothbrush (brush from side to side, not top to bottom) will do the trick.
BOTTOM LINE: This may well have a valued place in your kitchen, but it isn't the first one to buy.
